Mission Statement
by founder Dr Christopher Tong MA (Cantab) MB BChir
If you are here reading this then the first part of my job is done! The next part is to tell you about Grazeley Way Learning and why I created it.
Firstly some things about myself; I have been a doctor of medicine for the past ten years, a husband for the exact same length of time (having received my exam results ten minutes before the wedding ceremony!) and a father of two wonderful little girls.
I have always had a passion for teaching, realising from an early age my own aptitude for learning and using this to help others do the same, but never doing other people’s homework for them! Following A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Studies and an AS level in Geography, I went on to further education studying Natural Sciences at Peterhouse, University of Cambridge, gaining an MA (Cantab). During this time I also pursued an interest in caring for children with disabilities as a support worker for a Local Authority funded play scheme during the school holidays. My enjoyment of the combination of caring and science prompted my decision to apply for Medicine as a graduate and I successfully gained a place at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge.
During my time studying medicine, I was employed as a Supervisor - Cambridge speak for teacher of university students in small group sessions - exploring course material, setting and marking work to test understanding and prepare students for their end of year exams. I was fortunate enough to supervise at Newnham College, Cambridge, in the subject of Biology of Cells (Biochemistry) and after a successful first year I was also asked to supervise in an additional second subject, Physiology of Organisms. I continued to supervise these subjects for 5 academic years also being recruited to supervise at Corpus Christi College and St John’s College, Cambridge.
Following my graduation in 2013, I began practicing medicine in the north west of England, so as to be closer to family. Alongside my own continuing medical education, I was able to help the next generation of doctors with their training by providing opportunistic bedside teaching in addition to contributing to more structured teaching programs run by hospital education centres, participating in both group teaching sessions and individual pastoral “buddy” schemes.
Roll on a few years and the world was turned upside down by the Covid pandemic and I found myself volunteering my tutoring skills to help out friends and family with school age children in their upcoming GCSE’s, A-levels, International Baccalaureate and undergraduate medical exams. Having been reminded of how much I enjoyed teaching and the extent of the positive feedback I received I was motivated to turn my attention towards starting my own tutoring business and this is where Grazeley Way Learning came into being.
I realised I could offer a unique service combining my medical knowledge, varied teaching experience, enthusiasm and enjoyment of helping people learn, to provide a holistic approach to learning and help to give everyone the best possible chance of succeeding , whatever they want to learn.
The ultimate dream would be to grow the service enough to secure funding from grants and donations to enable us to provide services to those in need who may not have the means to pay.
In the meantime I will be offering my services in the form of bespoke paid sessions, in addition to an array of free learning content and lifestyle tips and tricks which will be available across social media platforms, you can access these via the links below.
